I specialise in grief counselling, mindfulness-based therapies and mind-body therapies.

If you feel that your grief is too much to bear and you are struggling to cope and function normally then finding a grief counsellor with expertise can be helpful. Bereavement counselling can help you through intense emotions and overcome obstacles to your grieving.

A bereavement counsellor can implement appropriate use of models of grief that have been developed by practitioners and researchers. Grief affects us emotionally, cognitively, physically and behaviourally. A skilled counsellor can help people with their knowledge, non-judgemental attitude and counselling skills.

It is important to find the right counsellor or therapist that works for you as the therapeutic relationship is a key factor in progressing with counselling or therapy.

I also specialise in mindfulness-based psychotherapies. Mindfulness is often incorporated into other therapeutic modalities called third wave psychotherapy as part of an integrative approach to treatment. These therapies are helpful for many mental health conditions as well as general wellbeing. Integrative grief counselling is tailor made to suit you - the individual.

Mindfulness Based Psychotherapies

Mindfulness-based psychotherapies are evidenced based for stress, anxiety, depression, emotional regulation and pain management. I will integrate and tailor make the sessions to suit your requirements. This is what we call an integrative approach to your health and wellbeing.

I can draw upon the traditions of using elements of CBT (Cognitive behavioural Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Therapy) and CFT (Compassion Focussed Therapy) together with the following programmes and therapies.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

MBCT is an 8-week program to help prevent relapse of depression. It is endorsed by the UK National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence as an effective treatment for the prevention of a depressive relapse.

MBCT has been shown to be to be most effective in helping people who have suffered at least three or more episodes of depression, reducing the risk of relapse.

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

MBSR is an 8-week program. It is designed to help people with chronic illnesses learn how to relate to pain differently and thus decrease their stress and suffering. It has been developed further to help people deal with stress of any kind - be it anxiety, relationship struggles or emotional pain.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a new third wave therapy which uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies, together with commitment and behaviour change strategies to serve your personal values and to increase psychological flexibility. The aim of ACT is to create a full, rich and meaningful life, while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it. ACT is suitable for a whole range of mental health conditions from grief to depression and psychosis.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is composed of a series of breath, body and awareness techniques involving some mindfulness. Yoga Nidra can be done by almost anyone as it is done lying down and there are no yoga poses to adopt and learn. It is very restorative, has a rejuvenative effect on the whole body and is very soothing. It can be helpful for burnout, stress, anxiety, physical pain and insomnia.

Trauma Informed Yoga Nidra can be helpful to enable someone to gently move through trauma, chronic stress and grief towards post traumatic growth.

I've known Simon since autumn 2018, and worked closely with him during the last 2.5 years as he's studied, practiced and taught Yoga Nidra and Yoga Nidra for trauma and attended workshops here in Devon.

Simon expresses himself clearly and from the heart, something not many professionals/academics manage to do if they've been working for years within a system/organisation that demands a certain language and/or process. He immediately makes people feel at ease - a warm, compassionate, down to earth guy with huge experience working in mental health and addiction. In addition to his qualifications gained over 25 years within the NHS and social services, he's an experienced mindfulness and ACT practitioner, and most recently has qualified in Yoga Nidra and Yoga Nidra for trauma, and grief training.

It's unusual and refreshing to find someone with such a broad range of skills and experience, as well as genuine warmth, perception, humour and kindness. It's a pleasure to know him, and I have no doubt he will help many people through their difficult times. Just being with him makes you feel better. :)

I am a practising senior mental health nurse registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC).
I have over 25 years experience in the NHS within the secondary mental health services as a mental health nurse.
Studied mindfulness based techniques at the University of Nottingham to degree level and have further completed an accredited mindfulness teacher's qualification.

Having recently taught the Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) programme in the NHS and also Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). I have gone onto complete a Diploma in Bereavement Counselling.
